New Comic Day 12.2.2010 (Early)

Yep, it's a post-Holiday week, so the books won't be out until tomorrow, but...it's a Wednesday tradition, right?

After the big hit of last week, it's nice to see a (just) under ten dollar selection, with a pricey "maybe."

Brightest Day #15 $2.99
Written by GEOFF JOHNS & PETER J. TOMASI
Art by IVAN REIS, PAT GLEASON,
ARDIAN SYAF, SCOTT CLARK and JOE PRADO
Covers by DAVID FINCH & SCOTT WILLIAMS
1:10 Variant covers by IVAN REIS

The hottest series in comics blazes on as the legacy of the new Aqualad is forged and the extent of his powers is revealed! Plus, Aquagirl joins the battle, and Firestorm seeks out the Justice League's help!

OK, I give up. I'm already over halfway through this, and  I'm obviously not going to drop it, no matter how much I talk about it. I'm invested enough to hang on, and I've dropped a few titles, so...fine, whatever.

Still, let me be clear, this is not a hugely successful crossover for DC editorial. The delays on Flash make that title, branded as a tie-in, seem way the hell over in it's own world, and now they seem to be just moving on to "Flashpoint," whatever that may be. What was the connection? Former Black Lantern Captain Boomerang? Well, he barely registered in Flash, and I've yet to see hide nor hair of him in Brightest Day, so...what?

 Like I said...NOT a tremendously successful crossover.

Jonah Hex #62 $2.99
Written by JUSTIN GRAY & JIMMY PALMIOTTI
Art and cover by EDUARDO RISSO

Happy Holidays, Hex fans! You've been good this year, so we got you an issue drawn by the incomparable Eduardo Risso! Jonah Hex was sure he'd seen it all – but that was before he was hired to escort a delivery through the desert. Who or what is "The Package"?

When I first read that solicit, I thought it was saying a Christmas-themed Jonah Hex story. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Alas, no. Doesn't matter. Have you heard about this series? Have I talked to you about this series? You NEED to be reading this series.

Wait a minute..."The Package?"  Hmmm....maybe it is a Christmas-themed story. Or maybe something about a old west porn star.

Ant-Man and The Wasp #2 (of 3) $3.99
Written by Tim Seeley
Art and cover by Tim Seeley

Ant-Man & Wasp have no time to make nice as they're tossed into the bizarre realm of the Mindscape! A.I.M has the doorway to the afterlife, and it's up to the Tiny Twosome to jump from the land of dreams, to the land of heavily armed A.I.M soldiers! But Bill Foster's soul may not be the only thing Monica Rappacini wants as Scientist Supreme faces off with Supreme Scientist! Hop on for Hank Pym's last adventure as Wasp in this mini-series!

One word. Seeley. Really enjoyed the first issue, and have no reason to suspect the second won't continue the fun. Way to go, Tim.

I am curious about the "Hank Pym's last adventure as Wasp" line. Hmm, nothing in the first issue really hinted at that.

MAYBE

Batman 80-Page Giant 2010 $5.99

Written by BRAD DESNOYER, MATT MANNING,
MANDY MACMURRAY, JOHN STANISCI,
PAUL TOBIN and PETER MIRIANI
Art by LEE FERGUSON, GARRY BROWN,
MATT SOUTHWORTH, RYAN KELLEY
and SZYMON KUDRANSKI
Cover by DUSTIN NGUYEN

Some of the most promising new talent in comics are corrupted by the most depraved villains in Gotham City in this all-new special featuring The Joker, the Riddler, Calendar Man, Scarecrow, and yes, even Humpty Dumpty! It's seven short stories, all in one giant issue! The joke's on you if you think you'll make it out of this alive!

These sorts of mash-up issues can be such a mess. A ton of stories stuck in a book together, sometimes with no seeming rhyme or reason. However, sometimes they can be a lot of fun, and you can get snippets of greatness from these young talents.

But there's no way to tell before you pick it up. so...maybe.

Good lord, Marvel!! Can you PLEASE figure out how to organize your damn website. I'm clicking around for what seems an eternity to find this week's shipping list, and it's NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. I had to go to a fan news site to get the Ant-Man and Wasp solicit info!

Yet, oh, man, right out in front, how to order a "sassy" Black Widow Iron Man 2 costume. Halloween was over a month ago!! Marvel comics, no longer the "House of Ideas," but the "House of Corporate Synergy."
